“Maiyannatup a Panagripirip:” Towards an Ilokano Indigenous Doing of Philosophy.Danilo S. Alterado & Aldrin S. Jaramilla - 2019 - Philosophia: International Journal of Philosophy (Philippine e-journal) 20 (1):97-110.
Philosophy is not all about parroting Western ideas and categorizations. There are esoteric philosophies, normally labelled as grassroot or indigenous, that are gaining recognition within formal academic circles. The Ilokano philosophy is alive at the margin, nonetheless implicit because its philosophical underpinnings are embedded in the way of life or cultural life of the Ilokanos. But through Maiyannatup a Panagripirip, the tacit Ilokano philosophy becomes outspoken and proves itself to be a rich source of humanistic principles. Dynamically translated as “Appropriate (...)

Pamulinawen: a Hermeneutics of Ilokano Cultural Self-understanding.Danilo Alterado & Aldrin Jaramilla - 2021 - Philosophia: International Journal of Philosophy (Philippine e-journal) 22 (2):275-290.
This paper aims to institute that the folk song Pamulinawen is essentially a work of art descriptive of Ilokano cultural self-understanding. Specifically, it wants to elucidate that Pamulinanen, per se, is capable of self-assertion; it can usher itself to engage in a dialogue with the Ilokano beholder, and through the mediation of a common pagsasao, it embodies the individual and/or Nakem, the Ilokano collective identity. More than a popular song of courtship among the Ilokanos, the song Pamulinawen then attempts to (...)

Social and ethical dimensions of nanoscale science and engineering research.Aldrin E. Sweeney - 2006 - Science and Engineering Ethics 12 (3):435-464.
Continuing advances in human ability to manipulate matter at the atomic and molecular levels (i.e. nanoscale science and engineering) offer many previously unimagined possibilities for scientific discovery and technological development. Paralleling these advances in the various science and engineering subdisciplines is the increasing realization that a number of associated social, ethical, environmental, economic and legal dimensions also need to be explored. An important component of such exploration entails the identification and analysis of the ways in which current and prospective researchers (...)

Um altar romano na baía do Guajará: programa iconológico e reforma católica na Catedral da Sé de Belém do Pará.Aldrin Figueiredo & Silvio Ferreira Rodrigues - 2016 - Horizonte 14 (43):975-1011.
This article analyses the role of sacred and religious art in Amazonia in the context of the catholic renovation movement of the 19th century, known as Catholic Reform. For that, it takes the order of the main altar of Our Lady of Belém by Pará’s Bishop Antônio de Macedo Costa to Italian architect Luca Carimini as its study object. This piece, along with others made throughout the period of Pio IX’s pontificate, constitutes an iconological programme as well as an artistic (...)

Ethical Inquiries After Wittgenstein.Salla Aldrin Salskov, Ondrej Beran & Nora Hämäläinen (eds.) - 2022 - Springer.
This volume showcases contemporary, ground-up ethical essays in the tradition of Wittgenstein’s broader philosophy and Wittgenstein-inspired ethical reflection. It takes the ethical relevance of Wittgenstein as a substantial and solid starting point for a broad range of ongoing thinking about contemporary ethical issues. The texts are organised in two sections. The first consists of chapters exploring questions around what could be called the “grammar” of our moral forms of life, and thus represents a more traditional approach in ethics after Wittgenstein. (...)

Pesticides and the perils of synecdoche in the history of science and environmental history.Frederick Rowe Davis - 2019 - History of Science 57 (4):469-492.
When the Environmental Protection Agency banned DDT late in 1972, environmentalists hailed the decision. Indeed, the DDT ban became a symbol of the power of environmental activism in America. Since the ban, several species that were decimated by the effects of DDT have significantly recovered, including bald eagles, peregrines, ospreys, and brown pelicans. Yet a careful reading of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring reveals DDT to be but one of hundreds of chemicals in thousands of formulations. Carson called for a reduction (...)

High Trait Self-Control and Low Boredom Proneness Help COVID-19 Homeschoolers.Corinna S. Martarelli, Simona G. Pacozzi, Maik Bieleke & Wanja Wolff - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 schools around the world have been closed to protect against the spread of coronavirus. In several countries, homeschooling has been introduced to replace classroom schooling. With a focus on individual differences, the present study examined 138 schoolers regarding their self-control and boredom proneness. The results showed that both traits were important in predicting adherence to homeschooling. Schoolers with higher levels of self-control perceived homeschooling as less difficult, which in turn increased homeschooling adherence. In (...)

Cronbach’s Alpha and Semantic Overlap Between Items: A Proposed Correction and Tests of Significance.Ghadah S. Alkhadim - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The purpose of the present study was to address the shortcomings of Cronbach’s alpha concerning the semantic overlap between items. Using an example from a motivational measure, the correction of Cronbach’s alpha was applied by partialing out the effects due to conceptual overlap. The significance of Cronbach’s alpha was tested using simulated random data derived from the measure and by estimating the confidence intervals with known and unknown distributions. The results indicated that the uncorrected conceptual overlap coefficient alpha was equal (...)

    Whitehead’s Categoreal Derivation of Divine Existence.Lewis S. Ford - 1970 - The Monist 54 (3):374-400.
Gottfried Martin has recently reminded us of a useful distinction between two possible ways of doing metaphysics. We may proceed by framing a “theory of principles” or by proposing a “theory of being”. Aristotle explicitly formulates both possibilities as the task of metaphysics, formulating a theory of principles in his doctrine of the four types of causal explanation in the first book of the Metaphysics, while exploring the theory of being in a number of other passages, such as Book I, (...)

    Kierkegaard’s “Johannes Climacus” on Logical Systems and Existential Systems.Jeffrey S. Turner & Devon R. Beidler - 1991 - Idealistic Studies 21 (2-3):170-183.
Part of the accepted scholarly lore about Kierkegaard is that he holds that “existence”—human existence—and “the System” are mutually incompatible. For Kierkegaard, human being cannot be understood in terms of a nice, neat, complete systematic package; he shows, on this view, that the Hegelian attempt to grasp all of reality in terms of a philosophical system will always fail to grasp the reality of at least one thing: the concrete, living, existing individual human being.

    William James’s Democratic Aesthetics.Stephen S. Bush - 2021 - Journal of Religious Ethics 49 (1):90-111.
William James is famous for his investigations of the “Varieties of Religious Experience” in which people encounter (what they take to be) the divine. But in his essay, “On a Certain Blindness in Human Beings,” his interest is in our experiences, not of anything purportedly supernatural, but of one another. He thinks we need to cultivate the capacity to apprehend the intrinsic value of others, even and especially of strangers. We do so in experiences of the wonder and beauty of (...)

Wisdom's Information: Rereading a Biblical Image in the Light of Some Contemporary Science and Speculation.Paul S. Nancarrow - 1997 - Zygon 32 (1):51-64.
The biblical image of Wisdom as the power who “orders all things well” in nature and in human life can be read in the light of contemporary information theory. Some current scientific speculation offers an interpretation of reality as a vast information‐processing system, in which informational situations are continuously transformed through algorithmic operations. This interpretation finds a metaphysical counterpart in the distinction between “nature natured” and “nature naturing” in the philosophical theology of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This confluence of religious, metaphysical, (...)

  43. A Critical Examination of James's Theory of Knower-Known Relations in "Does Consciousness Exist?".Andrew S. Bernstein - 1986 - Dissertation, City University of New York
There is a traditional view concerning the relation between mind and matter, knower and known. It posits a bifurcation between the two, maintaining, as Ryle puts it, that mind and matter are two distinct orders of existence. This traditional view comes, in large part, from Descartes. James rejects the traditional view, arguing instead for a close relationship between thought and object. His argument contains two components. The first stresses the close functional relationship between thought and object in our everyday experience. (...)

With reference to imagery from Matthias Grünewald’s masterpiece, the _Isenheim Altarpiece_, this essay considers how health-care practitioners especially— but all of us in practice—can learn to wonder in a way that does not objectify the differently abled but instead honors them. Wondering at the images in Grünewald’s work requires humility, curiosity, patience, compassion, and grit—virtues that all health-care professionals would do well to cultivate.
